ISO 41001 is a standard developed by theInternational Organization for Standardization (ISO) that provides a framework
for implementing and managing an effective Facility Management (FM) system. The
standard is intended to help organizations develop a strategic approach to
managing their facilities, including planning, designing, implementing,
operating, and maintaining them.
ISO 41001 waspublished in 2018 and replaces the earlier British standard BS 8564:2012. Thestandard provides a set of requirements and guidance for implementing an FM
system that is aligned with the organization’s goals and objectives.
The requirements of ISO 41001 cover a range of topics related to facility management,including:
Leadership and strategy — ensuring thatthe organization’s FM system is aligned with its overall business strategy andthat top management is committed to the system.
Support and operation — ensuring that theorganization has the resources, infrastructure, and processes in place toeffectively manage its facilities.
Performance evaluation — establishing keyperformance indicators (KPIs) and monitoring and measuring performance toensure continuous improvement.
Outsourcing — ensuring that any outsourcedFM activities are managed effectively and that the organization retains controlover them.
Life cycle costing — considering the totalcost of ownership of facilities over their entire life cycle, including design,construction, operation, and maintenance.
ISO 41001 is designed tobe applicable to organizations of all sizes and types, including commercial, industrial, public sector, and non-profit organizations. The standard is
intended to help organizations to improve their facility management practices,
reduce costs, and improve the safety, well-being, and satisfaction of employees
and other stakeholders.
